Pressure has increased on Merkel to shelter 11,500 refugees homeless due to fire in a refugee camp (fire)

Berlin:

There are plans to take 1,500 migrants to Germany, who are currently taking refuge on the Greek islands, government sources told AFP, in addition to about 150 illegal minors from the burnt Moria camp.

Sources said that under the plan agreed by Chancellor Angela Merkel and Interior Minister Horst Seehofer, Berlin would take migrants who have already attained refugee status, prioritizing families with children, sources said .

Merkel’s right-left coalition government is negotiating the plan, with her junior partner Social Democrats expecting an agreement from Wednesday.

After a fire in Moria, Greece’s largest refugee camp last week, there has been increasing pressure on Merkel’s government to provide shelter to 11,500 refugees displaced by the disaster.

Although Berlin has shown readiness to open its doors to more than 150 minors, German media reported that Athens opposed taking refuge from Germany to Moria.

Doing so could prompt more migrants to set fire to their asylum in Greece, in the hope that they will then be offered asylum according to Bldg, Europe’s largest economy.
